Is Facebook the new AOL?

Perhaps one day Facebook will rule the web in the way that AOL used to and Google does now. There are some interesting ways of connecting websites with Facebook. You can add a Like button to your site - see top right of this page. This is not to be confused with adding a Like Box for liking your Page. When a visitor Likes your website this is posted to their Wall and their friends Walls providing great promotion and a likely increase in visitors to your site.

But that's not all. You can also add your website to Facebook's Search so that it appears in Facebook results, as well as the web results from Bing. With 500 million users on Facebook this should also help drive traffic to your site. To see what I mean search Facebook for "Intranet Future". You'll see my Page but also a link to this website.

This new technology known as Open Graph raises some interesting questions. Will we all be using Facebook Search one day as we use Google today? Or is Facebook the new AOL?

Whatever the answers what's certain is that this is a area that those working in SEO will have to get up to speed on.

I really like how Facebook has evolved to survive and seems to be doing it well.

If you look at the likes of Yahoo and how they basically ignored the competition and the consequences of taking this approach and conversely look at the way facebook has done the opposite, it becomes a great case study for digital/social media platforms.

Just a few moments ago, I turned to my colleague and said that ˝every other day there seems to be some new feature on Facebook.˝ Much like Andy's comment, Facebook has got to move forward or perish. And, the decisionmakers seem to understand that.

It's hard for me to conceive of the possibility that FB would replace Google, but I used to use Yahoo and now look at me :)

But I just did my own test using the search term Fertility Flower. It pulled up notes from my personal FB page where I made reference to Fertility Flower, the Fertility Flower FB page and my comments AS Fertility Flower. When I checked on web results, there was the link to the actual web address too.

Interesting stuff, Intranet Future. I didn't really know this about FB.

Thanks for the comments guys. On staying ahead of the competition the latest rumour is that Google is creating its own Facebook called 'Google Me'. No official confirmation yet though. Google did try social media with Buzz but that hasn't really worked out. Seems like an action then a reaction is going on with these two!
